The effects of trauma can be healed.

Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s nervous system and ability to cope.  Whether a one-time or ongoing event, it can diminish a person’s ability to have healthy emotions and experiences.

Events can include physical, sexual or emotional abuse, domestic and community violence, war, accidents, life-threatening illness, death, birth trauma, natural disasters and ongoing fear and conflict. These can all have long-lasting effects if not addressed.

The effects of trauma can be devastating and debilitating. Symptoms of trauma may include, relationship difficulties, pain, disease, illness, substance abuse, addiction, weight or digestion issues, anxiety, depression, memory loss and learning difficulties.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

The higher the number of adverse childhood experiences or ACEs someone has, the higher the risk of debilitating physical and mental health conditions, behavioral problems, depression, and societal challenges later in life.

ACEs in Oregonians

Adverse Childhood Experiences before the age of 18 are indicators of trauma in adults. ACEs and other forms of trauma (historic and personal) are common. 44% of Oregonians experienced 2 or more ACEs during childhood; 22% experience 4 or more. ~Oregon Health Authority

The (estimated) economic impact of ACEs in Central Oregon is $12 million per year in health care costs alone.
