My interest in mental health and trauma began from a personal experience of trauma. After a particularly brutal mugging, I was left with a cracked skull, TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), and permanent hearing loss.
In time the physical wounds began to heal but what I could not escape was the emotional and mental health outcome, best understood now as single event PTSD. After four years of unsuccessfully ignoring the mental health component, I finally sought treatment. My therapist was an EMDR clinician and after almost a year of trust-building, we successfully engaged in the therapy.
They showed me in just about the most intimate way possible the real power of healing, community, and trust which forever changed me. A master’s degree, gender transition, and a national and state license later and I now find myself in the privileged position of providing healing, post-traumatic growth, and actualization to a wide range of communities. Particularly the LGBTQIA+ community.
